How To Adjust + Index Your Gears – Mountain Bike Maintenance Tips

Get your gears running as smoothly as possible with our guide to indexing and adjusting.

Smooth, well adjusted gears save a lot of hassle on the trail and can also save your ride; while poorly adjusted gears may not end your ride, one jump the wrong way and you could write off your wheel or even your frame. So, it’s a good thing to stay on top of.
The indexing and adjustment of your gears is done using the cable tension, barrel adjusters and limit screws. Sometimes, an old cable or worn out chain/cassette will be causing your problems, so make sure you check these too.
Unless you’re replacing your cables, you won’t need too many tools for this job; in fact, a multi tool with a range of allen keys and philips screwdriver will cover it.

All of a sudden my gears are all screwed up the selector will say 3rd gear but it will be in 2nd gear any quick fixes
I just bought a brand new derailleur and cable today. I bought the same derailleur as last time but when I go to put my cable on its to short. What could of happened. with my old derailleur it fitted perfectly. I then went on to checking the size comparison and they are the same. please help!
Great instruction on this video. I got my shifting back to smooth after I noticed some issues. I was able to troubleshoot everything. Thanks Neil and GMBN!
you got a Jneiro Jarel beat playing in the background… holy she it.. best tut ever.
Need to ask, why in any name of the smallest bit of logic, would you put the REAR brakes on the LEFT but the gear shifters to the REAR on the RIGHT!!!
You drive on the WRONG side of the road AND have the brakes on the WRONG side!!!
The REAR gear shifters on the RIGHT should have the REAR BRAKES on the RIGHT. Rear wheel control on the RIGHT!!! ALL OF IT!!!! BRAKES AND GEAR CONTROL!!!
Right handlebar control = REAR wheel control!!!
It is logical and makes sense!!
Get with the program and swap that REAR brake control to the RIGHT, the correct and logical side!!!
Great video otherwise!!!
Always great content…just get that rear brake lever on the correct side!!
How about the set up in the gear? where the pedals are?
Great video. Thx. Jd
very helpful thanks Neil thumbs up like!
best video i've ever seen! great work as always!
But i got a question why do you have your rear brake on the left hand side?? mine is on the right hand side (have to say that it's not a mountain bike)
this video helped me a lot, good job, neil.
What about the front gears. My bike has three at the front and nine at the back and the chain always falls off at the front from like a 30cm jump or drop. To fix that is it similar to the back??
May I know if it will spoilt the dropper post stanchion if you clamp on it? As I saw you did that in the video.
This is by far the best tutorial for fixing gears I've seen. Worked perfectly on my first try
Excellent video! Thanks.
Just fully calibrated my derailleur with help from this video !
When I'm go on to second it switches to third , then if I go into third the chain comes off
thx guys
How bout the B-screw??
Hi! When I turn the adjuster screws nothing happens! (the chain is loose as it should)(Shimano Deore) What should I do?
My gears shift smoothly up and down the block although it won't shift into the lowest gear. When the cable isn't attached, the chain goes all the way up. But once I put the cable back on, the chain can't make it to the top.
You guys rock. Great video.
Looks like a project for tomorrow morning!
I'm trying to like this video but the guy filming should should have shot the actual parts and not the guy's face. dudes trying to explain how to do something we need to see if not look at the man's face
This was no help
What about when it shifts gears when u pedal hard up a hill with out touching your shifter?
How can I properly straighten my rear derailleur if it's bent inwards?
this video have been damaged !! can't loaded up, stopped at 2.29 min
oh is it exactly same principal for front mech?
something I thought was impossible my whole life. I had gears totally out of whack. watched your video and now sorted. easy! Thank you so much!
This video is very helpfull
Really helpful video!
